Weight Loss Myth #3

All Calories are Created Equal:

Counting Calories is the Way to Go.

Calories are units of energy – the energy that makes our bodies go.

Of course, if we eat many more calories than we use, our body will store them as fat.

HOWEVER… calories from different foods are metabolized differently.

A low-fat muffin and a low fat latte may have the same number of calories as an omelete with vegetables and a little sausage, but the body will respond very differently to these two sets of calories.

Processed Calories vs. Whole Calories

Calories from processed foods like the flour and sugar in the muffin and coffee, are rapidly absorbed by your body.

They spike your blood sugar and will cause a hormone response that will tell your body to store calories as FAT.

The double whammy is that hunger comes again much more quickly and intensely, increasing the likelihood of snacking, overeating, even binging.

Subjected to the impact of processed foods, the body never learns to burn its fat stores (even if we are restricting calories)

Calories from whole foods (as close to the way they are given to us by Nature) slowly release into your blood stream. This is because they are bound together in more complex chains – with each other, but also with fiber, vitamins and minerals (which the body needs to work correctly).

It takes more time for the body to unlock the energy and nutrition, which prevents the “Store Fat!” hormone response. When you eat whole foods meals, you feel satiated and satisfied longer.

Be consistent with whole foods and your body learns to burn fat for energy.

Which breakfast helpds you lose weight?

1) muffin
2) Kashi cereal
3) oatmeal
4) whole grain quinoa porridge
5) omelet with veggies and a little sausage
(without chemicals and from a healthy animal, of course)

The first 4 meals are all grain meals and they range from most processed (the muffin) to a complete whole food (quinoa).

People think Quaker Oats are the best!
Doctors even recommend it.

The reality is that these meals have less nutrition and cause a higher blood sugar spike (think craving, hunger and weight gain) than the whole food version.

So, it is clear that NOT all calories are created equally, and that we must take into consideration Quality of calorie, and we especially want to focus on calories from whole foods.

What % of your diet is whole vs. processed?

Are you stressing over counting the calories in foods that come in boxes, cans and bags?

Give yourself a break! Stop counting calories and make a commitment to eating real foods that give your body the nutrients to do what it KNOWS how to do and WANTS to do- quickly shed excess pounds.

Your body will “right-size” itself if you give it the nutrients and the balanced blood sugar to do so.

In our programs, you will master one energizing whole food group at a time, learning FAST and delicious ways to prepare them.

After you master one, you move onto the next, never giving up your processed foods.

Processed foods, even the ones you think you are addicted to or never want to give up, naturally disappear as you fall in love with high energy whole foods that naturally support your body’s desire to release weight.

Your Unique Metabolism

The last point I want to make on this topic is that you have a unique metabolism, requiring a unique diet.

Compare breakfast #4 and breakfast #5 - the whole grain quinoa porridge vs the eggs and veggies. Both are full of wholesome, nutrient-dense whole foods.

Which is foods will fuel your fat burning?

Many people will say the porridge, because its lower fat and doesn’t have dead animals in it.

Others will say the eggs and veggies, because it is low carb and doesn’t have grains in it.

The answer?

Well, it depends on the person.

You see, you are unique. Just like no one looks just like you on this planet, internally you have a unique style of metabolism that ultimately requires you to follow a one-of-a-kind diet and lifestyle plan.

Some people will feel better and lose weight most quickly when they eat a higher complex carb meal like a whole grain porridge or a fruit smoothie for breakfast, while others feel and see the fastest weight loss results with meals higher is protein and fat, and lower in carbohydrate like the omelet.

Just like all calories are not created equally, all bodies are different too, and so each body reacts differently to different foods.

Weight Release Tips #3

Stop Counting Calories. Instead Take These Actions Immediately:

1) One Addition- choose one new vegetable to include in your diet this week. Learn a delicious and simple recipe- like the ones we send out in our newsletter each week.

2) One Upgrade – choose one processed food that you commonly eat and upgrade it to a whole form. (e.g. upgrade breakfast cereal to porridge)

3) Experiment! – Experiment with a number of different breakfasts. Listen to your body. Which one gives you the most energy? Which one satisfies you the longest? (two critical signs for your unique metabolism)

The “Simple Equation” Weight Loss Myth:
Eat Less & Exercise More

Plus Weight Release Tips #2. (For your immediate action.)

Last week we shared with you Weight Loss Myth #1:

“The Warfare Weight Loss Myth”

We asked you to consider:

1) Your body is a highly intelligent bio-computer that rarely makes mistakes

2) Your body knows EXACTLY how to achieve it’s ideal weight

3) Your body WANTS to be at your ideal weight.

4) Your body waiting for you to provide the proper fuel and proper conditions to spring into action and begin releasing unnecessary weight.

And then we posed the “million dollar questions”…

1) What is the proper fuel?

2) And, what are the proper conditions?

And I didn’t give you a straight answer.

Instead I asked you to first apply Weight Release Tip #1:

“Make Peace with Your Body and Your Body Fat.”

So many of you chose an oppressive food or exercise rule to reverse, and then took on a loving, powerful nourishment goal for your bodies.

I applaud you for taking on an intelligent approach to your weight release goals, and now its time for Myth and Tip #2, which exposes a COMMON and seriously devastating WRONG answer to those million dollar questions.

If you struggle with your weight, and are confused about why, this just might be the “AHA!” moment that sets you FREE… finally giving you access to your body’s natural ability to release excess body fat, for good.

Weight Loss Myth #2

“Eat Less & Exercise More”
The Simple EquationWeight Loss Myth

What is the proper fuel and what are the proper conditions that will turn on your body’s metabolic power to readily shed unnecessary, unneeded and unwanted body weight?

Well, the diet and fitness industry would have you believe the devastating myth that you simply need to:

1) Eat less (fewer calories), and

2) Exercise more (especially on treadmills and elliptical machines)

This is simply NOT true!

Buy into this myth and there is a good chance you’ll end up even FATTER.

How could that be??

Remember that the body is hard-wired for survival and rarely makes mistakes. We haven’t been around on planet Earth for so many years for nothing.

You see, the “Eat Less” Myth unwittingly triggers
a Fat STORAGE Survival Mechanism.

Do you skip or skimp on breakfast and/or lunch?

Well, instead of burning more calories, the body responds as if it is a survival emergency. It releases chemicals that urge us to search for food, NOW! Do you know that feeling?

In the meantime, the body decides to conserve precious energy by increasing fat storages and slowing down fat burning.

“But I lost weight this way!”

You may have lost weight this way. But did you KEEP it off?

You will lose weight by under-eating and exercising like mad, but there is a problem:

At least half that weight will be muscle.

Burning off your muscle mass is like shooting yourself in your foot.

Why?

Because muscle burns 70 times more calories than fat. Burn off your muscle and you destroy your body’s ability to burn fat.

And THEN, when you can’t take the hunger, cravings and mood swings that come with skipping and skimping, and you CRASH off the diet, the weight that is gained back comes in the form of fat.

Now, you are in an even tougher situation than before: with less muscle and more fat – and much less fat-burning capacity for the next round of dieting.

Weight Release Tips #2

Be in Action

Did you fall for the “Eat Less, Exercise More” Myth?

a) Stay Satisfied and Sated

Keep the body from releasing the “Find food NOW!” chemicals, which slow metabolism and fat burning throughout your body, while setting you up for snacking and overeating later in the day.

Never skip meals or leave a meal hungry, especially breakfast and lunch.

Prioritize 3 meals per day full of whole foods that satisfy and satiate you.

Hint: If you are eating out of boxes, bags and cans on a daily basis, consider getting some support to master fast and delicious cooking.

b) Exercise Smarter, NOT Harder.

Prioritize movement that will build fat-burning muscle like weight lifting, power yoga, pilates, etc. Think slow movement with more resistance for your major muscle groups in ways that are completely natural: squating, lunging, pushing, pulling.

I personally love Paul Chek’s “Eat, Move and Be Healthy” for a very clear and helpful guide on how to create a personalized exercise program that is simple, fun and effective.

3 programs to Release Excess Weight, NOW:

The “All Day Energy” Online Program

The 7-Day Sugar Detox

Weight Loss Myth #1

Your Body Fat is the Enemy

Diet, supplement, and fitness companies want you to believe that your body fat is a cunning and ruthless adversary you must be ever be on guard against, even at war with.

People say, “I’m battling my weight! It’s like my body hates me.”

The reality is that your body is a highly efficient “bio-computer.”

It rarely makes mistakes.

All the way down to the level of DNA, it is checking itself for errors constantly and repairing any damage.

Weight gain is a natural and intelligent response the body is genetically programmed to make under certain conditions.

And… your body knows EXACTLY how to achieve it’s ideal weight.

Even better, your body WANTS to be at your ideal weight.

It’s waiting for you to get on board- to provide the proper fuel and proper conditions.

It will instantly spring into action, and release unwanted, unnecessary weight, so you can function at your peak.

So, there is no need to fight your body or the fat that is part of your body.

Warfare Weight Loss is like a group of people oppressing another group of their own countrymen, falsely thinking they are bad or inferior.

Ultimately, there will be lack of cooperation and eventually a major backlash.

That’s what happens when we do deprivation dieting, force ourselves to eat boring, bland foods, or endure torturous workouts…

You’re inevitably left with uncontrollable craving, snacking and overeating, and distaste for exercise and physical movement.

So the million dollar questions are…

What is the proper fuel?

And, what are the proper conditions?

Well, there are lots of myths and misinformation about these questions too, and we will cover that over the next 4 weeks, so stay tuned.

Weight Loss Tip of the Week

But for this week the Tip is to stop doing battle with yourself, your body and your body fat.

The key to success is getting all parties on the same page – which is the way we are designed, so it’s not that hard to do.

So your tip for the week:

1) Take an inventory of a number of things you do or don’t do to lose weight.

Your list might include:

What you eat.
What you don’t eat.
How much you eat.
When you eat.
Whether you do eat.

How you exercise.
When you exercise.
What type of exercise.

2) Review the list and mark a star next to all the ones that seem more like a weapon in a war than a loving, delicious and fun way to live your fabulous life.

3) Identify the one that feels most oppressive and give yourself a break from it this week.

4) Ask yourself, “If my body really does know how to find my ideal weight and it wants to be at that weight, and its just waiting for me to make friends with it and give it proper nourishment and care…

What is one simple way I can nourish and care for myself this week?”

5) And then when that answer comes, if it makes you smile, follow the advice.

“Your Body Fat is the Enemy”
The Warfare Weight Loss Myth

Plus Weight Release Tip #1

Diet, supplement, and fitness companies want you to believe that your body fat is a cunning and ruthless adversary you must be ever be on guard against, even at war with.

People say, “I’m battling my weight! It’s like my body hates me.”

The reality is that your body is a highly efficient “bio-computer.”

Your body rarely makes mistakes.

All the way down to the level of DNA, it is checking itself for errors constantly and repairing any damage.

Weight Gain is Intelligent

Weight gain is a natural and intelligent response the body is genetically programmed to make under certain conditions.

And… your body knows EXACTLY how to achieve it’s ideal weight.

Even better, your body WANTS to be at your ideal weight.

It’s waiting for you to get on board- to provide the proper fuel and proper conditions.

It will instantly spring into action, and release unwanted, unnecessary weight, so you can function at your peak.

So, STOP fighting your body or the fat that is part of your body.

“Warfare Weight Loss”

“Warfare Weight Loss” is like a group of people oppressing another group of their own countrymen, falsely thinking they are bad or inferior.

Ultimately, there will be lack of cooperation and a major backlash.

That’s what happens when we do deprivation dieting, force ourselves to eat boring, bland foods, or endure torturous workouts…

You’re inevitably left with uncontrollable craving, snacking and overeating, and distaste for exercise and physical movement.

Can you relate?

So the million dollar questions are…

What is the proper fuel?

And, what are the proper conditions?

Well, there are lots of myths and misinformation about these questions too, and we will cover that over the next 4 weeks, so stay tuned.

Weight Release Tip #1

Make Peace With Your Body

But for this week, the most important step you can take is to
end war on yourself, your body and your body fat.

The key to success is getting all parties on the same page – which is the way we are designed, so it’s not that hard to do.

Instructions:

1) Take an inventory of the decisions you make in order to lose weight.

Your list might include:

What you eat.
What you don’t eat.
How much you eat.
When you eat.
Whether you do eat.

How you exercise.
When you exercise.
What type of exercise.

2) Mark a star next to the rules that seem more like weapons in a war than loving, delicious and fun ways to celebrate your fabulous life.

3) Identify the one that feels most oppressive and give yourself a break from it this week.

4) Now ask yourself:

“If my body really does know how to find my ideal weight and it wants to be at that weight, and its just waiting for me to make friends with it and give it proper nourishment and care…

What is one simple way I could nourish and care
for myself this week?”

5) And then when that answer comes, if it makes you smile, follow the advice.

We offer 3 program that will help you Release Unneeded Weight:

Individual Coaching

The “All Day Energy” Online Program

Is your doctor healthy?

When choosing a doctor, it makes good sense to choose one who is vibrant, healthy and loves her life. Luckily for North Baltimoreans, they have a new neighbor who fits that bill to a tee- Dr. Melissa Carrick.

A surfer, marathon runner, and lover of early morning Nature walks, Dr. Carrick recently opened her practice, Carrick Health and Chiropractic, in the former district police building, in the 34th block of Keswick Rd. in Hampden.

Jack of all trades,Doctor of Chiropractic

Dr. Carrick has a rich and unique educational background including her Doctor of Chiropratic from Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, a Masters in Theology, and a BA in English. She is a certified Brimhall Practitioner, and a Holistic Health Counselor.

Despite her multi-disciplinary interests, chiropractic runs in her blood. Dr. Carrick’s father is a nationally renowned doctor, in practice for 32 years as the director of an integrated chiropractic clinic in Wilmington, Delaware, as well as a lecturer nationwide.

It is no surprise, that Dr. Carrick the younger has the skills and toolkit of a seasoned veteran. Beyond the manual and instrument adjusting of the spine, extremities, and viscera, she utilizes Applied Kinesiology, SOT and Craniopathy, Neuro Emotional Technique, and even treats her patients to the latest in non-invasive laser technology.

What ails you?

Hampden’s new doc is well equipped to serve individuals and families for both acute and chronic ailments, as well as for preventative care.

Dr. Carrick enjoys a particularly high success rate with patients experiencing fatigue, sinus conditions, hormonal imbalance, and headaches.

Most cases of carpal tunnel, tennis elbow and shoulder pain are resolved in several visits.

Why is Dr. Carrick so successful?

Beyond her extensive training and experience, Dr. Carrick is a phenomenal listener and makes a thorough investigation into the causes of the patient’s imbalance- exploring all possibilities, including the structural, functional, emotional, nutritional, and even spiritual.

Through the treatment process, she takes the time to educate the patient about how her body works so she can do everything in her power to recover, heal, and prevent future problems.

Choose a doctor who loves life and lives life to its fullest.

Dr. Carrick has a deep fondness for Nature, and happily lives in Roland Park. She is a long time surfer, runs marathons, and in her spare time, she officiates at weddings.

She has a passion for travel, and spent 2 years in Micronesia teaching at a boarding school. In 2007, Dr Carrick worked with Olympic athletes in Brazil, at the Pan American games.

Baltimore is so lucky to have a burgeoning community of holistic doctors who get results and empower their patients. Dr. Melissa Carrick is raising the bar.
