My poor parents tried everything they could think of, but I did not stray far from <strong>PB&amp;J, cheese and crackers. </strong>I was terrified of new foods and saw no reason to bother with scary foods when there were plenty of foods I would eat.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 10px;">Well, <strong>I wish I knew THEN what I know NOW-</strong> about the profound impact nutrition has on growth, development and health.   When I learned of the effects of cigarettes on the body, I made <strong>my parents quit smoking</strong>.  Similarly, if I had known the <em>REAL</em> story about nutrition then, even as a picky child, I believe I would have eagerly expanded my food choices. (Tele-Seminar #1)<strong> </strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 10px; text-align: left;"><strong>I wanted nothing more than to be a big, strong athlete</strong>.  My dream, even up to the age of 18 was to play collegiate and professional baseball.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 10px;">I had no idea that <strong>my food choices were crippling my dreams.</strong></p>
<h2 style="padding-left: 10px;">Nutrition Can Make or BREAK Our Health (short and long term)</h2>

<p style="padding-left: 10px;">What motivated me to enroll in nutrition school was<strong> my brother becoming seriously ill.</strong> I was not excited to hear that the doctors were only talking about drugs and surgeries for his treatment.  Researching online, I found many people who had healed themselves of the very  same condition through nutrition and lifestyle changes &#8211; <strong>WITHOUT DRUGS OR SURGERIES</strong>.  I was so inspired I enrolled in nutrition school.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 10px;"><strong> </strong> Luckily, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition goes way beyond the politically correct conventional nutrition that is stunting kids growth and keeping Americans low energy, overweight and sick. <strong>What I learned about nutrition for child development, SHOCKED ME. </strong></p>

<p>I started out my career <strong>teaching cooking to inner-city youth. </strong><br />
Dr. Antonia Demas, PhD (Food Studies Institute) hired me to lead<br />
a pilot project site at a middle school here in Baltimore.</p>
<p>You have to see Dr. Demas&#8217; methodology in action<em><strong>.</strong></em><strong><em><br />
Even the pickiest kids</em> ate greens, beans, grains and veggies.</strong><em></em></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;"><em>What&#8217;s the Big Secret?</em></h2>
<p>And how can you apply it to begin seeing results with your child?</p>
<h2>1) Hands On</h2>
<p>Make time to cook with your children.  When your child makes the food herself she will become familiar with each ingredient.  The final product is suddenly less scary.</p>
<h2>2) Fun with Food</h2>
<p>Use food to make edible art projects.  This is another way to have a pressure-free, fun and hands-on experience.  Engage all the senses.</p>
<h2>3) Multi-Sensory</h2>
<p>Ask your child to investigate and describe each ingredient with all of her senses.  Develop a vocabulary that allows the child to accurately describe the food and her experience of the food.</p>
<h2>4) Pressure-Free</h2>
<p>Tell your child that she never has to try anything that she doesn’t want to.  This takes the pressure off.  Have her help you make the “adult dishes.&#8221;</p>
<h2>5) The “No Yuk” Rule</h2>
<p>In exchange for the pressure free rule, request that your child not make any negative comments or gestures about the food.  Explain that taste is subjective and subject to change.  I’m sure there is an example of a vegetable your child likes now, but hated earlier in life. Use this as an example.  Model this rule and enforce it strictly.</p>
<h2>6) Leverage Peer Influence</h2>
<p>Organize cooking with your child and several of her friends.  The larger the group the better.  With the “no yuk” rule in full effect, the children on the fence are often swayed by the “mmms”  and favorable reviews from those that love the food.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Busy Parents <em>Can</em> Apply These Methods</h2>
<p>The strategy I see work most successfully for parents is to organize regular play dates with other children and their parents.  Parents rotate responsibility of leading the class, while the others socialize and relax.  Of course, it&#8217;s even better if your child&#8217;s school, after-school, or camp programs feature this sort of education.</p>
