“Get the flu vaccine!” –warnings and admonishments bombard us on ticker tape at the local CVS, flood the televised news, and urge us over the radio.
With President Obama’s latest health decree, it is even implied that it is unpatriotic to choose not to get the flu vaccine for you or your family.
Animal studies do demonstrate the effectiveness of flu vaccines to produce antibodies in the recipient and reduce severity of symptoms when exposed to the very same flu strain.(1)
Are the projected benefits worth it? There are concerns about the vaccine’s effectiveness to stop viruses that quickly mutate, along with the potential risks (for which vaccine companies are never liable for under US law).
A clear red flag for me is that many health care workers, including general practitioners, pediatricians, and nurses, refuse to get the vaccine.
A second red flag of the H1N1 vaccination: this year’s vaccination was rushed to production, with a mere 6 weeks of testing. Safe?
A third red flag, is that the vaccine recipe includes many toxic ingredients such as aluminum, mercury (thimerisol), formaldehyde, egg and monkey proteins, and squalene – not to mention the live H1N1 virus itself.
There is much more to be said for both sides of the argument, but I’d like to make two critical points that are missing from the national debate.
Amidst the swirling debate, it is difficult to know who and what to believe, and it is even harder to hear your own voice, informing you about what you want to do with your body and your health.
One thing both sides can agree on is that fear and anxiety will degrade your immunity. Which brings me to one of my two main points: be decisive.
The final flu vaccine decision is for each person and each parent to make for herself. The decision should leave one feeling confident and peaceful- fully benefiting from the immune boosting power of inner calm.

Once you’ve made your decision, you can focus on what our country really should be talking about- the many powerful (and proven) natural steps for flu prevention… and better health
These first few steps are already on the radar screen for many of you, but it is important to understand the science behind them and to powerfully follow through.
1) Kick Sugar and Processed Foods
A teaspoon of refined sugar lowers the body’s immune response for up to 6 hours! But you don’t have to suffer without sweet flavor. For instance, boost immunity with natural sweets, like sweet potatoes, beets and carrots (rich in immune boosting vitamin A).
2) Get Great Sleep!
Regular sleep allows the body to repair itself, as well as offers a time for your organs (including the immune fighting ones like the liver and spleen), to rest and cleanse themselves – thereby leaving you with a refreshed immune “team”.
3) Move it or Lose It!
Daily exercise, even as little as 20 min of walking, boosts immunity- stimulating T cell activity, as well as activating the lymphatic system, which helps to circulate your immune cells and remove impurities and invaders of your system.
4) Make Friends & Laugh!
It may sound silly, but friendly social interactions and laughter have been proven to improve immunity. Phone a friend to tell them how much you love and appreciate them – tell them you are improving your immunity . . . and giving them a boost with theirs.
These next 3 are still simple and affordable steps, and they require the skills and training of a doctor.
5) Get Adjusted
Regular chiropractic adjustments keep my patients healthy and flu-free.
Michelle (mom of two children under 5, who had been frequently plagued throughout the fall, winter and spring with repeated colds, and fever) said, “I can’t believe it – this is the first year since they’ve been born that my kids haven’t been sick!”
The organs of your immune system are regulated by nerves running through the spine. When the bones of the spine are out of alignment, even slightly, the immune system is hindered. Adjustments not only remove the interference but also stimulate the immune system so it can function optimally.
6) Optimize Vitamin D
Vitamin D is one of the surest, proven ways to boost your immune system, particularly in warding of viral illnesses. Vitamin D blocks the receptor sites on the cell membrane where viruses enter the cell. Low levels of D have not only been linked to flu, but to cancers and many degenerative diseases.
In Baltimore, during the darker months, it is nearly impossible to get enough Vitamin D from sun exposure; thus we should all supplement.
I only use pharmaceutical grade (natural only) Vitamin D, as it is unknown how much of various grades the body will actually absorb, or what type of Vitamin D is actually contained in sub grade Vitamin D (e.g. Vitamin D2 is not a usable form within the human body).
Vitamin D can be toxic in large amounts, so it is important to work with a doctor to optimize levels.
7) Supplements and Remedies
I implement a homeopathic prevention program with families, to keep everyone healthy. And at the first sign of flu or cold, I utilize a supplement program and cold laser therapy that aids in quick recovery – usually a 24-hour turn around.

1. Don’t forget to remove the giblets from the rear cavity of your turkey before cooking!
2. Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Higher temps may result in a dryer turkey. Start with the breast down, turning it over about halfway through the estimated cooking time, or the last hour.
3. Basting is not required for a juicy Springfield Farm turkey.
4. Cooking times vary dramatically – plan on 12 minutes per pound. The surest way is to use a meat thermometer. Internal temperature should be 170 degrees in the breast, 180 degrees in the thigh and 160 to 165 degrees in the center of the stuffing.
Brining with salt-water before cooking results in a moister, more delicious turkey.
